Yeeeehaw! CCD plays old-timey music with an independent-minded bent, and the effect is one part cultural, one part feel-good. The banjo is the jumping off point, and everything else — jugs, various strings, etc. — seems to be arranged around it in the name of good times and bad. Their new album Leaving Eden makes use of everything but the kitchen sink, although I can’t be sure I’m not hearing a kitchen sink in a few songs.

This Durham, N.C.-based twangcore alt-country outfit puts its own spin on Americana with a harmonica that fights the soul and jazzy moments that keep us guessing. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is an apt comparison, thanks to a rustic and contemplative approach, served with haphazard lyrics that feel hyper-real. To some, they’ll forever be a footnote in the Bon Iver narrative — drummer Joe Westerlund and brothers Brad Cook and Phil Cook were once co-conspirators with Vernon in a band called DeYarmond Edison, in which Vernon developed his noble voice as a musician. But Megafaun on its own is just as artful and forward-thinking in its psych-folk framework — check out their self-titled 2011 release for proof.

The Soul Rebels get right to the heart of New Orleans music, playing ferocious funk and second line grooves that will lift you out of your seat. They bring fresh elements to the mix - hip-hop, go-go, and reggae beats - along with some unexpected song selections, all layered on top of a hundred years of street-wise jazz tradition. Each member of this eight piece ensemble brings serious chops to the party. At the forefront of the city's musical revitalization, the band brings a resurgent energy to Unlock Your Mind (out now), filling it with the most exciting, head-spinning, body-pumping music to emerge from New Orleans in years.

The band's seventh LP is the surreal and powerful musical tale of Cassius and Pollock, twin brothers separated at birth. One good and one evil, their unexpected reunion in a house that is not a home ignites a classic struggle for the soul, played out with a cast of supporting characters that includes a chorus of angels and devils, and twin sisters conjoined at the head.

Some of us just can't stand Valentine's Day. Fortunately, there is an entire genre of music made just for our pain, and it just happens to also be the most badass music ever: POWER BALLADS. When metal went glam, and glam boys needed radio hits to afford the fancy hair product they'd grown addicted to, they slowed it down a bit for the ladies and created the anthems that would become theme songs for an entire generation. We'll hold lighters in the air and sway, we'll pound our fists at the sky in defiance of those who would dare not love us, and we'll do it all with teased hair and animal print tights on. Featuring the music of Guns 'n Roses, REO Speedwagon, Bon Jovi, Journey, Warrant, and more!

Who is Eleanor Friedberger? Friedberger is previously known for her work in Chicago power-pop harmonie-musik The Fiery Furnaces, a band she created with her brother Matthew at the turn of the millennium. They’re too modest to mention that they’ve won a number of awards, sold out happenings the world over and made nine albums, most recently Take Me Round Again, a collection of cover songs from their previous album. That experience, combined with the fact that The Fiery Furnaces aren’t breaking up, inspired her to make her first solo record, Last Summer, last summer.
